The King of Famicom

I saw this awesome video on Kotaku today and I had to share it here ,as well. It’s called The King of Famicom and it’s theoretical “fighting game” that mashes Nintendo, Capcom, Irem, Sunsoft, Hudson, Taito, Namco, Konami and Sega together in one glorious title. Just imagine a Street Fighter version of Super Mario Bros. Crossover.

Most of the characters referenced should be recognizable by western audiences, besides the lot from Sunsoft.

Super Mario Bros. Crossover

Super Mario Bros. Crossover

Imagine being able to play the original Super Mario Bros. as Mega Man, Samus Aran, Simon Belmont, Link, Bill Rizer or even Mario. Dream no further because thanks to Exploding Rabbit now you can.

Super Mario Bros. Crossover is as close to a picture perfect version of the original Super Mario Bros. as you can get on the web. All the additional characters (Samus Aran from Metroid, Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Link from The Legend of Zelda, Bill Rizer from Contra and Mega Man from Mega Man) look, sound and behave as they did in their original games. Even the music for the stage changes depending on who you choose.

Which character to use and when definitely depends on the level. I highly recommend using Simon Belmont on 1-2. His throwing axe will break through most of the blocks added a brand new experience to the game.

As a classic gaming purist I cannot give this game a higher recommendation.

The Key to Living Off of Your Webcomic

You hear people telling you how it should be done. There are websites solely dedicated to the proper procedure. There are even books telling you how to do it. But none of these people tell you that the true key to creating a financially successful webcomic is your primary source of income.

The key to living off of webcomics is twofold. First, you need to have a popular webcomic (easily done, right?). And second, you also need to forgo the American dream. This means no house, no kids and no other large expenses (ie. expensive car, large credit card debt, etc…).

I’m not telling you that you can’t be happy. You can date. Hell, you can even have a girlfriend/boyfriend or a spouse, but I don’t recommend having both. Plus, if you want your significant other to live with you they had better be paying part of the bills. And depending on how financially successful your webcomic is they should probably be paying most of them. If not, then you’re going to need either a roommate or parents to mooch off of.

You see, most webcomic artists don’t make a whole lot of money off of their creations. Sure there are those who do (ie. Penny Arcade, Questionable Content, Least I Could Do), but they’re the exception, not the rule. I personally make a decent amount from Dueling Analogs. If I was single, had a roommate and no debt I could easily live off of what I make. But being married, having two kids, a mortgage and other financial obligations it’s just not happening anytime soon. Maybe one day, just not now.

You see, I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. Webcomic artists have no problems telling you how they created a successful webcomic. They tell you about their formula for writing and how they create their art. But nine times out of ten they forget to mention that they also live a very thrifty lifestyle to make ends meet. There’s definitely money to be made in webcomics, just keep a realistic perspective on how much.

What’s Next Mr. Video Games?

Mr. Video GamesIn the Eighties it was platformers (ie. Super Mario Bros., Contra, Mega Man) and adventure games (ie. Legend of Zelda, Star Tropics, Adventure ). In the Nineties it was beat ‘em ups (ie. Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe) and fighting games (ie. Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, Soul Caliber III). In the Zeroes shooters (ie. Halo 2, Metroid Prime, Team Fortress 2) and sandbox games (ie. Grand Theft Auto IV, Saints Row 2, Fallout 3). So the question  is: What’s genres will be big on the console market this decade?

With the Wiimotes, Playstation Move and Project Natal either on the scene or horizons there’s potentials for brand new genres that could never have existed before. Or maybe the next console incarnation will be so computer integrated that home consoles themselves will be the ideal place for gamers to play such things as MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). Or maybe the console market will dry up completely and the video game industry will mainly reside elsewhere.

I honestly don’t know. Though it is still fun to speculate what the future has to offer.

Beards Turn Laziness into Awesomeness

Beards Turn Laziness into Awesomeness

HilariAwesome, an online store that provides things that are hilarious and/or awesome, is running a pre-order for their hilariously awesome beard shirt. Inspired by this comic the design was a joint collaborative between The System‘s creator, Ross Nover, and with one of the co-creators of Hello With Cheese, Bryan Prindiville. Definitely a cool t-shirt design to own which also has an additional secondary function built in. It reminds me that I need to shave.
