Sega Genesis Version of Super Metroid’s Music

Sega Genesis Version of Super Metroid’s Music

by Steve Napierski to Videos

Imagine the music of Super Metroid if it was done for the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive. Okay, now stop trying to imagine it and simply click the play button on the YouTube video above.

What you will then hear is doubly eerie! One, because it does sound somewhat creepier than the actual Super Nintendo’s version. And two, because hearing it really shows the limitations of the Genesis/MegaDrive’s audio capabilities when compared to its Nintendo counterpart. But then again, it’s though limitations that give it it’s creepier sound. So go figure.

On a somewhat related note, I did a version of the Metroid theme as it might have been performed by the 70s incarnation of the band Gensis – http://soundcloud.com/spilth/mellotroid-theme

I was just playing the Sonic Mega Collection on my Wii the other day and remembered just how distinctive but horrid the Genesis audio processor was. There’s that bland warbled sound that occurs all the time. When I was younger it just used to be something that signified I was indeed playing the Genesis. Now that I’m older it makes me cringe. I guess distinctiveness doesn’t make up for horrid sound.
