The plan was not to swap the cartridges with the system powered on, but instead to enter the menu, turn off the system, and quickly swap carts before turning it back on. The Rambus RAM in the N64 could hold data for a short time after powering down the system (I've heard 30 seconds, but I have no source on that) which would have allowed the data transfer. The problem is, there was a hardware revision for the console at some point after BK's release that removed the ability to keep that data in RAM, so the idea was scrapped.

Well sorta implemented. What happened was if you got stuff from the XBLA versions then you could use it to get stuff in Nuts and Bolts... but I heard it just ended up being crappy parts for your car.

Whats there know it was canceled.

All I know is it was suppose to be a mechanic where you found the eggs in BK1, removed the BK1 cartridge while the console was still on, plugged in BK2 and the eggs would unlocked stuff.

Thing is with cartridges if you remove them while the console is still on you just end up freezing the game, and probably ruining your cartridge. The mechanic probably would have worked better if they went with a CD format instead of cartridges.

Or they could have done something like Sonic 3 & Knuckles where you could physically plug the two games together.

Anyway it was one big cluster fuck, like just about everything else in the series history. From the way the video portrays their development it's a miracle they even came out. Lucky they did as BK1 & 2 are some of the best games on the N64. I still have my copies and after watching the video I feel like playing them again.

I think I heard the Stop & Swap was finally implemented successfully when the two games were put on the Xbox Live Arcade.
