The Mario Brothers

The Mario Brothers

by Steve Napierski to Images

It’s just one of those gaming truths that a lot of people never think about. Even though the first time it was really brought before the public’s eye was in Super Mario Bros.: The Movie, back in ’93, most people were fortunate enough to have never seen it.

Sergeant Simon: Name.
Mario: Mario.
Sergeant Simon: Last name.
Mario: Mario.
Sergeant Simon: And you?
Luigi: Luigi.
Sergeant Simon: Luigi Luigi?
Luigi: No, Luigi Mario.
Sergeant Simon: Okay how many Marios are there between the two of you?
Luigi: Three: Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.

You’d be surprised who doesn’t know this.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure I remember people talking about this at least eight years ago.

I’d imagine stuff like this is somewhat cyclical. New generations of fans means new waves of people that haven’t thought of these things. Used to be that it was Samus being a woman, but that’s no longer much of a secret. There’s also the fact that Birdo is transsexual that people don’t think about.

Or maybe Mario’s dad was also Mario , and since he’s the eldest soon he got the name, and everyone calls them Mario Brothers because of their Father Mario Senior and not Because of Mario Jr.

we’ll i tryed to save the day

I think it was cos they were orphans, and Mario basically raised Luigi. Not knowing their real surnames (or maybe even their original names), Mario just went with ‘Mario’ for them both.

      *sniff*

Maybe you’re not playing as Mario in the games. Maybe you are playing as a sibling of Mario’s who people regularly mix up with Mario.

Super Mario’s Brothers! Luigi and the one everyone thinks is Mario!

No, you’re not alone. I know it gets hate, but I’ve always found it entertaining.

Eh, I always prefered the Super Koopa Cousins XD

For all the randomness, and absurdity it contained, it’s still a stupid-fun movie to watch, so long as you’re able to avoid taking it seriously.

I always enjoyed the movie. Its basically a sci-fi movie with tons of Mario references. If you go in watching it thinking that way, its easily enjoyable. Plus when you really pay attention, you start catching a lot of references you didn’t before and will notice more references in the background. Like the Fry Guy (SMB2) ad in the Boom Boom (SMB3) bar.

Nah, I like it too. It’s just supremely weird. You have to be in the right state of mind for it.

This is actually a common misconception. Word of God from Nintendo is that Mario has no official last name, but that it is definitely NOT Mario.

Many people in Spain think that their last name is “bros.” xD

It actually came before that on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show; they were just much more casual about it than the movie (“the Marios,” “Mama Mario,” for instance, and no bits dedicated to the silliness of it– probably because it would have been the least-silly thing on the show).

    Here’s an example: http://youtu.be/J7UySV_gPPQ?t=1m37s

actually, in japan, most families just take the name of their oldest son instead of having an actual last name

I’ve seen the movie. Still have it on VHS sitting on a shelf in my living room.
I think it is a highly underrated entertaining movie.

Remember the ending where Daisy comes back carrying a BFG and looking like Hell’s right on her heels. I think for a sequel they could have had that alien from Super Mario Land whats-his-name…Tangerine…Tatooine…Topanga…goddamn it I know it starts with a T! Anyway I think him leading a huge alien invasion would have made for an awesome film. Like Independence Day only a million times better.

Now does anyone remember the Mario Bros/GTA fan movie trailer. I think it was posted here awhile ago. THAT seriously needs to get made!
