Final Fantasy – Secrets Revealed [ IMAGE ]

I saw this image on Reddit a couple days ago. It showed how eeriely similarities the faces of Cloud, from Final Fantasy VII, and Lightning, from Final Fantasy XIII, were. Unfortunately, I thought the original image deserved to look better. So I found the source images, rebuilt the missing content, made it as slightly larger animated GIF and placed it on here. Proof is in the pudding.

Cloud & Lightning - Final Fantasy

What does it do for any purpose?

    • TecXero

It shows you can feel straight while with Cloud :3

You could probably toss half a dozen other Final Fantasy characters into that mix and still get the same results. Tidus and Vaan would fit pretty well I think.

    • Scott

Tidus and Vaan would fit well against each other, maybe, but Cloud and Lightning are a lot pointier, if that makes any sense. They’re made up of sharper, harder edges. You’d be better off with Squall. And Zell, for that matter. And Irvine. And Vincent.

Is it me or does Lightning appear more masculine that Cloud? Not that I mind. Her slightly gritter look has always kinda appealed to me, even if the game was.. well.. yeah..

  • Eagle0600

Those faces aren’t similar, and the shifting image just proves it. The proportions of basically everything changes.

    • Kat

My thoughts exactly. Different eye shapes, nose shapes, nose height, ears, eyebrows…

When the FF13 director admitted he wanted a female cloud it’s not surprising they have similar characteristics…

    • This is EXACTLY what I was going to say. It’s no “OMG! I’ve just realised they look familiar!” It was made like that. Lightning was DESIGNED to look like female Cloud-like character. This is one of the first things that the makers said before the game was released or much was known about it… Although, the different nose shape and brow shape I’d say the only thing similar is the jaw line and vaguely the eye colour.

That’s Cloud remade from Advent Children. He doesn’t look queer in the original artwork.

    • Armane

And Lightning doesn’t look as mannish in game.

ya, that’s because the picture used is the concept version, the one in game is more feminine, after they tweaked her to look less like him.

        Still quite similar though

  • I always figured she looked far more similar to Ashe. I think the similiarity between Lightning and Cloud can mostly be explained as similar-to-identical art styles – a human face is a human face, and there are always going to be some similarities between any two faces in the same style.

  • Cynic

They just have the same jawline and (lack of) cheekbones, s’all…

  • Randomgamerdude

They both wear zipper jackets too. Scary.

  • Ray

my question is who is this person that these character models are based off of??

  • Evolni

To be fair I see no similarity besides the fact that they are created in a similar art style. Besides the obvious hair and wardrobe differences… Clouds Nose is long and crooked while lightnings nose is short and straight. Cloud’s skin is rough and blotchy while lightnings skin is smoothed to near perfection. Lightnings lips are thick and bright as a woman’s lips should be, and Clouds lips are thin and pale as you would expect from a worn body. Cloud has the cold look of a Soldier while Lightning has a softer look of regret. and as for the closest similarity I can find Clouds eyes are a deep vibrant blue, whilst lightnings eyes are a seafoam or turquoise colour. Honestly to me that’s like saying all asians look alike.

It’s no secret that Lightning was meant to be a ‘female version of Cloud’, Director Motomu Toriyama actually said that to the character designer when they were first coming up with the idea.

“EGM: What can you tell us about the heroine of FFXIII?
Motomu Toriyama: We can’t tell you all the details, unfortunately. Looking at the history of the FF series, there were already female main characters, like in FFVI, FFX, and FFX-2. This time, one of the characteristics of this heroine is that she’s not that feminine. I tried to make her someone very strong, independent. When I asked Mr. Nomura to design this character, I requested someone like a female version of Cloud from FFVII. “
