Eg someone who plays CoD plays an easy, popular game and thus cannot be considered hardcore, but if someone were to play Dwarf Fortress, a super difficult game that isn’t as popular and requires a massive time commitment to even stop your dwarves from starving to death, they should definitely be considered hardcore. Popularity is used here because playing a hard game that is super popular can be done to make yourself appear more impressive, whereas a real hardcore gamer wouldn’t even care to tell people s/he plays a game s/he’s good at because s/he doesn’t give a fuck about the filthy softcore mortals.

If you only play fps’s or rpg’s or even facebook games I don’t think you should be qualified. To be a hardcore gamer you should be able to pick up any game and at least hold your own. You may play pokemon for 100 hours a week but if you can’t even handle rotating a camera and moving, you’re not hardcore. Likewise, if you’re on a pc and you can’t even set up your hotkeys, you’re not a “hardcore gamer”.

I know plenty of “hardcore” players that can only play one game (call of duty comes to mind). Sure you’d be a hardcore c.o.d.er (or whatever you want to be called…I’m sure your gamer tag has lots of x’s and the word “snipe” in there somewhere) but can you even throw a hadoken?

That is to say, someone who doesn’t simply play easy mode mindlessly, but plays to either reach some goal or attempts to figure out a better way to play etc.
