I’ve seen this premise before. Good comic, nonetheless.
To be fair, your version all those years back didn’t have as strong an implication about actually wanting to play the game. In fact, it could easily be interpreted as he NEVER had any intention of playing the game, and buys games solely to decorate a shelf. Only real implication that he wants to someday play the games as an adult is A. How much he loved it as a kid and B. How most of us feel in the same situation. This version just blatantly states it, leaving little room for doubt about his intentions.
Not saying yours was necessarily worse. Just done in a different style.
