I am definitely guilty of doing this.
Irony… Mario Kart 8 actually DOES use leaning the controller as a steering mechanic.
It’s all come full circle, hasn’t it? lol
It’s on by default in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
You can turn off motion controls and smart steering permanently during the race though, so it’s not so bad. But I did sit there wondering why my kart kept was steering slightly to the right for the first couple races.
I’ve always done this growing up, but for me it was more about immersion than about thinking it helped with the controls. It’s a lot like how people who get motion sickness often do because of the disconnect between what they see and what they feel. And oddly enough, I’ve found anecdotally that people who get motion sickness are the most likely to do this. Go figure.
This is why the Wii was invented.

My friends and I refer to this as ‘Time Crisis Syndrome’. And yes, we do it in public in arcades.
